Capture the Essence: Choosing My Top Photo of 2023

My “photo of the year” is no longer going to be based on Instagram likes as in the past. As I dive deeper into my photography journey, I want to convey the true meaning behind my photos. That’s why for this year, I chose an image that holds a deep personal connection for me.

In 2023, my adventures took on a captivating maritime theme. From taking an eco-tour of New York Harbor to whale watching off Cape Ann, Massachusetts, I was surrounded by the allure of the sea. I even hopped on the Cape May – Lewes Ferry four times to go to the Assateague and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuges in Virginia.

And here it is, a single photo that encapsulated the essence of my nautical escapades. This snapshot froze a moment during a horseshoe crab tour at Sandy Hook Recreation Area, organized by the American Littoral Society. The image nicely portrays our tranquil connection with the water, as the seining net represents the manmade and the gentle ebb of the bay’s water approaching the net symbolizes nature.

Beyond its meaning, this photo visually captivates me. The image is an intricate tapestry, weaving together various elements. From the net to the buoy, the sand to the water, each has a texture that offers a captivating contrast. It is a complex scene but it maintains a harmonious balance that draws in the viewer and holds their interest.

I hope you like it.
